Πλησίον, δεν είναι αυτός που δέχεται την αγάπη, αλλά αυτός που την προσφέρει. Που τρέχει να βοηθήσει. Δεν είναι ο λήπτης αλλά ο δότης. Αυτός γίνεται πλέον και πλησίον του Θεού. Τον φέρνει δίπλα του. Η πράξη της αγάπης λύνει μεν το πρακτικό πρόβλημα του αποδέκτη της, κυρίως όμως, ευεργετεί πνευματικά τον ευεργέτη. Πραγματικός λήπτης... είναι ο δότης. Αυτή η διατύπωση, εξυπονοεί ότι η αγάπη μεταμορφώνει τον πλησίον σε εαυτό. Τον καθιστά κομμάτι της υπάρξεώς μας. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός λέει επίσης, να θυμηθούμε: «πείνασα και μου δώσατε να φάω, δίψασα και μου δώσατε να πιω [...] σας βεβαιώνω πως αφού τα κάνατε αυτά για έναν από τους ελαχίστους (άσημους) αδελφούς μου, τα κάνατε για μένα» - Κατά Ματθαίον 25:35-40
Πάνω από όλα ο συνάνθρωπός μας, είναι η εικόνα του Θεού. Η ορατή παρουσία του σ' αυτό τον κόσμο. Είναι ο Θεός εκείνης της στιγμής. Η ευκαιρία μας - μέσω αυτού - για να ψηλαφίσουμε τον ίδιο το Θεό.
Αν αισθανθούμε τον άλλον, απλά ως «συνάνθρωπο», του δίνουμε από αυτά που έχουμε. Αν όμως τον αισθανθούμε ως αδελφό μας, του δίνουμε ό,τι έχουμε - τα πάντα μας. Αν τον δεχτούμε ως αδελφό του Χριστού, δίνουμε από αυτό που είμαστε και αν τέλος αποτελεί τη φανέρωση του προσώπου του Θεού στη ζωή μας, τότε, δίνουμε, ό,τι είμαστε. Όλον τον εαυτό μας.
